Abstract
The cultural acculturation between the Sasak people and Islamic teachings in Lombok reflects a process of encounter that does not occur unilaterally but through dialogue, interpretation, and reconstruction of meaning; however, in-depth studies that examine this phenomenon from the perspective of philosophy of culture and multicultural approaches remain relatively limited. This study aims to analyze how local values rooted in ancestral traditions are integrated with Islamic teachings introduced through da‘wah and education, and how this acculturation shapes local identity and the configuration of a harmonious multicultural society. Employing a qualitative method based on literature review and hermeneutics, the study interprets cultural symbols, rituals, language, and social values that have undergone transformation with the arrival of Islam. The findings show that Sasak–Islam acculturation has taken place in adaptive and creative ways, including the use of the Sasak language in Islamic religious rites, the reinterpretation of rice symbolism, the integration of adat into religious education, and the transformation of marriage traditions that combine customary norms and sharīʿa. Philosophical analysis underscores that this process of acculturation not only preserves local identity but also constructs a model of multicultural coexistence in which traditional values and Islamic teachings are brought into alignment. By comparing several relevant studies, the article demonstrates that Sasak–Islam acculturation possesses a distinctive character grounded in cultural and religious dialogue, while also highlighting the power of locality in shaping a tolerant and moderate society.
